Sedation Dentistry Helps Alleviate Patient Anxiety at Fort Lee, NJ Dental Practice

Fort Lee, NJ (PRWEB) December 20, 2011
According to a recent study conducted by the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS), 30% of Americans avoid dental visits because of fear or anxiety. Dr. Joel Singer provides a wide range of dental treatments, including general, cosmetic, and sedation dentistry in New Jersey. He says experiencing anxiety before any type of health-related office visit is common for many patients; however, he adds that the anxiety for some patients can reach an uncomfortable and stressful degree, which is why he offers patients the choice of several levels of sedation at his New Jersey dentistry practice.
Dr. Singer says sedation dentistry is also commonly referred to as sleep dentistry, though patients are never fully anesthetized or unconscious. He says patients merely reach a relaxed state, allowing them to remain unaware of the treatment. Whether he is replacing crowns or dentures, or fixing stained and chipped teeth, Dr. Singer says he is able to accomplish more work in each appointment when using sedation dentistry, thereby reducing the number of office visits required for a number of comprehensive procedures.
At his New Jersey dental practice, Dr. Singer says he most often uses oral sedation dentistry, which requires patients to take a small pill prior to treatment, and then allows them to remain comfortable throughout the entire procedure. The oral sedation method also means no needles are required, which Dr. Singer says further alleviates any anxiety or fear his patients may experience. Many times, phobic patients might not get the dental treatment until something hurts or breaks, which is why we dont start any treatment until the patient is really comfortable.
